Say NO to for-profit utility corruption & overspending.

WHAT WE’RE SAYING:

Dear Governor Newsom,

Enough is enough. We can no longer stand by and watch monopoly utilities and their executives reap record profits while we struggle to pay our electricity bills. In 2024 your CPUC approved SIX rate hikes for PG&E alone while they made a record $2.4 billion profit.

Let’s be clear: we need to stop letting utility companies hide behind the threat of wildfires as a blanket excuse for their runaway spending — or worse, for pointing fingers at consumers as the ones to blame. The truth is, wildfire-related costs account for only 12% of total utility spending. Meanwhile, California’s investor-owned utilities continue to enjoy some of the highest guaranteed rates of return in the country every time they build more poles and wires. The result? A broken system where the more they spend, the more they profit. It’s basic math — and it creates a dangerous, perverse incentive to overspend, all while passing the costs onto consumers who had no say in the matter.

We call on you to hold the utilities accountable and ensure that your regulators, including the five people you appointed to the Public Utilities Commission, are standing up for consumers and fixing a very broken system once and for all. Our government regulators need to stop scapegoating, blaming consumers for this mess, and offering false solutions. California consumers need real leadership when it comes to fixing our broken utility system.
